Each year, from October to March, more than 20,000 dolphins and porpoises are killed by fishermen in Japan. These dolphins are killed to supply the meat trade, to suppress competition, to prevent pressure on the Whaling and Tuna fish industry and to sell dolphins to aquariums and dolpinariums read full story / add a comment

Many areas have to be tackled in our efforts to end Greyhound racing in
Ireland. However none more vital than stopping the annual sports capital
grants from the Irish government. These have amounted to 105,000,000 euro
since 2001.As we are in a recession now surely Hospitals or the elderly
would be more deserving causes. Contacting and appealing to Bord na gCon to stop the slaughter and suffering of Greyhounds that is inherent in racing is like asking the butcher to become vegan, maybe harder. read full story / add a comment

As many of you will know, the Irish government is drafting new legislation for the upcoming Irish animal welfare bill and this will be a critical and crucial time for animals in Ireland. We have the opportunity to stop many heartbreaking acts of cruelty to animals, from homeless abandoned and abused dogs and cats seeking shelter on the cold wet streets to animals that are chained and confined in the circus, to greyhounds suffering and dieing in the Irish racing industry, barbaric bloodsports, cruel fur farming, painful and unscientific animal experiments and much more the list is endless and much goes unnoticed, but we must not allow this to happen, we intend to rip the lid off cruelty to animals in Ireland make it widely known that animals are not ours to use or exploit in anyway, shape or form. read full story / add a comment

HUNT BREAKFAST WAS A DOG”S DINNER Fox hunters get toasted as breakfast seminar loses keynote speaker and gets infiltrated. A seminar organised by the Hunting Association of Ireland to address the ‘vegan agenda/animal rights threat’ has been described as ‘farcical and ill-informed’ by the Alliance for Animal Rights (AFAR), one of the leading animal rights groups in Ireland. The organiser of the event Mr Gavin Duffy was left with a large dose of egg on his face when Padraig Walsh, President of the IFA, who was billed as a keynote speaker at the event, vehemently distanced himself from the agenda of the Hunting Association of Ireland. read full story / add a comment

ARAN activists recently staged a protest on the steps of the Australian embassy in Dublin to call for an end to live cruel sheep exports from Australia. Our activists cordoned off the area as a crime scene with barrier tape reading 'crime scene do not enter' whilst the 'sheep' played dead and covered in fake 'blood' layed on the steps, whilst other members held placards calling for an end to the cruel live export of sheep. Press coverage was fantastic helping to direct the public's attention to cruelty to animals - all in all a very positive, upbeat event to draw attention to a very serious issue. read full story / add a comment

Demo at the Austrian National Tourist Office Merrion Center, Nutley Lane, Dublin4 01-2830488 01-2830531 Second Irish support Demo on TUESDAY 22nd July 2008 1-2pm. ADDRESS ABOVE……….. Scandal of Justice Continues: New Extension of Remand in Custody for Austrian Animal Protectionists Because the suspects refused to renounce animal protection, their remand in custody was extended on the grounds that there remains the risk they will perpetrate criminal offences! The District Court of Wiener Neustadt extended the remand in custody of the ten animal protectionists for a further two months today. Even after inspection of the numerous computers and photos that have been confiscated, not one single substantiating charge has been added and many of the existing charges that made the strong impression of having been fabricated have already been dropped by the Chief Public Prosecutor. Nevertheless, the authorities insist on further remanding the animal protectionists in custody. read full story / add a comment

The National Animal Rights Association staged another protest outside the Pearl Brasserie, on Saturday 12th July. We stayed there for over 2hours, had no hassle whatsoever on the night, and received a lot of support from passers-by. No Gardai were called, and the protest went without incident. We have already gotten 4 restaurants to stop serving this dish of cruelty, and we won't stop until we get a total ban on the import of foie gras in Ireland. If you'd like to get involved in our campaigns, or know of any restaurant not on our list that is serving foie gras, please get in touch. read full story / add a comment

MP Peter Pilz (Green Party) Visits Martin Balluch in Prison Directly followed by a press conference outside the entrance to the prison Today MP Peter Pilz visited DDr Martin Balluch in the Josefstadt prison in Vienna. He described how he had to pass through three security checks before being able to speak to Martin over a telephone and see him through a glass screen. Their conversation was overheard and documented by a prison official. At a press conference directly after the visit Mr Pilz told the press that he now had an inkling as to what it's like to be locked up on remand. The opportunity to put questions to the Green Party Minister was seized by members of the press. MP Pilz's main contention is that, despite the Public Prosecution's accusations collapsing like a house of cards, so much so that not much is left over apart from the ominous paragraph 278a (criminal organisation), the 10 animal protectionists are still imprisoned. read full story / add a comment

European Vegetarian and Animal News Alliance (EVANA) In an attempt to justify remand custody and draconian police measures, a hunting cabin, which burnt down as a result of an over heating stove, was used against the animal protections as an accusation of arson. This scandal comes just weeks after it was revealed that the prosecution falsified a statement of a crown witness On May 21 2008 masked and armed officers of the Austrian elite squad WEGA broke into homes and offices of NGO workers and organisations at the crack of dawn. Since that day, 10 people arrested in the raids have been detained in remand custody. One of the detainees, president of VGT (Association against Factory Farms) Dr Martin Balluch has, also since that day, been on hunger strike. He is presently being artificially fed read full story / add a comment

The Alliance for Animal Rights (AFAR) supports Care for the Wilds campaign opposing Tescos turtle sales. We urge our supporters to Boycott Tesco shops here in Ireland. CWI investigators who visited 32 Chinese Tesco stores in April and May discovered that staff do not adhere to Tesco's new slaughter policies. In 12 stores where CWI witnessed slaughter firsthand, staff continued to kill turtles by decapitation alone or by evisceration. CWI also found large numbers of disembowelled turtles with intact heads for sale. read full story / add a comment

The young sow struggled for hours in the snare until a local lady became aware of her plight. When she contacted Badgerwatch it was late Saturday afternoon. The snare had pulled so tight that it had become embedded in the animal’s lower abdomen and across the groin areas. Loose earth in the vicinity demonstrated her struggle for freedom.. To add to her misery, the snare had actually been set on a ditch. The local conservation ranger was notified but he did not attend. read full story / add a comment

On 21st May 2008 at 6 a.m., heavily armed police officers from an elite unit stormed 21 homes and the offices of a number of non-governmental organisations in Austria. Breaking their way in, the masked police surrounded frightened civilians in their beds at gun point. Ten people were arrested and have been held in custody without specific charge since that day. Despite the statement by the Austrian Federal Ministry of the Interior that "The measures taken by the police (.) were in no way directed against animal welfare or animal welfare organisations", the removal of computers, documents and other assets has effectively crippled some of the organisations involved. read full story / add a comment
