The Minister has made a career out of stating the obvious but this time he has surpassed himself. While he accepts that the increased fuel bills are causing concern, the Minister then states that his colleague Mary Hanafin is monitoring the impact on pensioners. In fact there is no need to monitor anything – the price rises in both gas and electricity and in the basic cost of a bag of coal are breath-taking and will force many pensioners to go without adequate warmth this winter. A bag of coal is now eighteen euro. read full story / add a comment

Some things in life are pretty obvious. One is that you don’t attack a heavily armed gang that outnumbers you 30 to 1. So what was Georgian leadership thinking when it ordered an attack on South Ossetia? There can be no question that they thought they would be able to defeat Russia. There are, after all, limits to human idiocy. read full story / add a comment

Last weekend marked the 29th Anniversary of the Sandinista Revolution. On the 19th July 1979 the hated dictator and US hireling Somoza was overthrown in Nicaragua. As part of this year’s festivities Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega honoured the leader of one of those few European countries to stand side by side with the Sandinista Revolution during the 1980s. The leader was the Late Erich Honecker, the country, the German Democratic Republic. read full story / add a comment

15 members of the police officers, prison guards and doctors were found guilty of brutality, including physical and mentally torturing at the G8 summit in Genoa in 2001 and sentenced to between five months' and five years' imprisonment. The charges include abuse, fraud, criminal coercion and inhuman and degrading treatment. One demonstrator was shot dead by police and hundreds more injured at the summit in the city of Genoa that was hosted by Italian premier Silvio Berlusconi. The heaviest sentence of five years was given to an inspector in the penitentiary police department. All those convicted are expected to appeal and none will go to prison until the appeals process is complete, which normally takes years. The lengthy trial proceedings and the statute of limitations mean that none of the defendants will serve any time, but the verdict paves the way for a major compensation claim. read full story / add a comment

MANILA, Philippines -- This year’s G8 summit in Japan, gathering the world’s most advanced industrial economies is happening amidst a global crisis on oil, food, poverty, and environment – a problem unequaled since the first G8 summit in 1973 concerning the oil crisis and the subsequent global recession. read full story / add a comment

Over the past few years i have raised in indymedia the damage done to the working class movement by left sectarianism and advocated that attempts be made by left groups and left activists to work together much more. For this I have been attacked and slandered by the leadership of the old organization of which I was a part, the Socialist Party in Ireland. I am very glad to see that the Socialist party in Britain now appears to be taking steps in the direction of trying to work together with other groups on the left. I hope when I raise this again i will not be treated as some sort of heretic. Comradely, John Throne. read full story / add a comment
laois / anti-capitalism / news report Sunday July 06, 2008 03:03 by William Phelan
In a move which is shocking in its cynicism and casual brutality the HSE in Laois, and I assume nationally, has stopped a free taxi service which had enabled parents with children in foster care to visit their children once a week. This attack on a marginal group with many health and social disadvantages is a clear indication of how theGovt intend to make the poor pay for its recession. The old , the sick and the poor yet again. We must organise to defend basic social services against these slash and burn tactics. read full story / add a comment

national / anti-capitalism / press release Saturday June 14, 2008 14:53 by Irish Socialist Network
The Irish Socialist Network welcomes the decision of the Irish people to reject the Lisbon Treaty – a document that would have promoted the militarisation of the EU, entrenched Thatcherite principles in European law, and further undermined democracy. After this result, the Lisbon Treaty should be dead and buried. No re-hashed, re-packaged version of the same document should be foisted on the people of Europe. No means no. read full story / add a comment

The government is pursuing a policy of centralising health services into a small number of regional centres. The policy has been advanced under the title of "Centres of Excellence". But there is no evidence for the 'robotic centralisation' of acute hospital services, including cancer. But if you want to cut the the public health system––to make room for private ‘providers’––‘centralisation’ is a lethally effective way of doing it. And funneling all patients into a small number of large units facilitates the collection of specimens ... read full story / add a comment

"History is a nightmare from which I am trying to wake." - Stephen Daedalus, in Ulysses, James Joyce 1922 Oaxaca City, Mexico, May 15 - Midnight in Oaxaca, and walking around the historic center, it's almost as if nothing had ever happened here. The bourgeoisie sit around under the colonial arches in the long stretch of French-style outdoor cafes lining the central plaza. Aside from being beset by a small army of ambulant trinket vendors and beggars, the well-heeled citizens sipping cappuccinos seem very at ease with the world. A few late night tourists wander about the pleasant old streets under the starry sky, and the industrious hum of the sultry cosmopolitan city invokes an eternal calm. read full story / add a comment |
