A bit of rain didn't stop thousands from taking to the streets of Dublin to celebrate what is now a fixture in the Irish calendar and to campaign for Marraige Equality for same sex relationships. If an act of savagery such as the bombing of an airliner, the murder of captive on an internet video, the assassination of a politician etc with the publicity it generates in the modern media can shake the will of a society that is more economically powerful and militarily stronger, an individual already contemptuous of decadent democratic politics, might be inclined to believe it is a greater crime not to use political violence and information manipulation to achieve his ends. read full story / add a comment

The Department of Agriculture is currently drafting legislation to update the Animal Welfare Bill, which will be brought to the Government for approval in the coming months. Although the summary draft of the bill focuses primarily on aspects of farming, such as the control and eradication of animal diseases, and the slaughter and disposal of animals/animal by-products, it also seeks to update the Protection of Animals Act 1911 on cruelty-related offences. It will also include provisions to deal with inspections for specified animals and the conditions in which they are kept (for example, pet shops). read full story / add a comment

Property developer Bernard McNamara has been asked to pull out of two stalled development projects in Dublin so negotiations can begin with other contractors. "How do you recognise a ghost? By the fact that it does not recognise itself in a mirror. Since all of a sudden [the mirror] no longer plays its role, since it does not reflect back the expected image, those who are looking for themselves can no longer find themselves in it. Men no longer recognise in it the social character of their own labour. It is as if they were becoming ghosts in their turn. These ghosts that are commodities transform human producers into ghosts. And this whole theatrical process (visual, theoretical, but also optical, optician) sets off the effect of a mysterious mirror." dublin / animal rights / news report Monday June 09, 2008 22:18 by Laura Broxson
On Saturday 17th May, members of the National Animal Rights Association organised a demonstration outside the Pearl Brasserie restaurant. This was in protest of the fact that they serve foie gras, a so-called 'delicacy' that is produced so barbarically, it is illegal to farm ducks and geese for it in Ireland. Within minutes of the protest starting, activists were hosed by members of staff, and threatened by the owner (which resulted in the Gardai having to be called). Undeterred by what happened, activists returned to the Pearl Brasserie, on Saturday 31st May. It was a very visual and effective protest, which went by without incident. A short video clip was taken, which includes footage of the owner of the restaurant, Sebastien Masi (the one who threatened us), recording us with a video-camera. Have a look! Also, below are some facts on foie gras, for anyone who isn't familiar with the issue. read full story / add a comment

Dublin youth activists united in protest today outside the European Union house to urge a No! vote in this Thursday’s Lisbon Treaty referendum. The protest, which included an open mic and street theatre, was jointly organised by Ógra Shinn Féin, and the Connolly Youth Movement, with members of the IPSC and Anarchist activists also in attendance. Following a very imaginative and visible protest which had Brian Cowen and Charlie McCreevy present, there was an extensive canvass of the thronged Grafton Street asking people to secure a better deal for Ireland, and vote No! read full story / add a comment

Opponents of the Lisbon Treaty claim that Ireland will become part of a Pan-European Army. However their hysteria betrays a profound ignorance of our military weaknesses and indeed the military weakness of the European armies even the big three, German, France and the United Kingdom. None of the European armies shows any likelihood of being able to overcome nationalistic rivalries, duplication of resources, linguistic difficulties and a plethora of different weapons systems that would make a Pan-European army exist anywhere except in the fantasies of Brussels bureacrats even if a common defence treaty is made official. read full story / add a comment
