On July 16th , 2007, the Georgia board of Pardons and Paroles stayed Troy Davis' execution:

'It would not allow an execution to proceed in this state unless and until it's members are
convinced that there is no doubt as to the guilt of the accused."

It went on to assert that there was compelling evidence of his innocence that had not
been heard by the courts. read full story / add a comment

Manchester Pc Daniel Gaffney was jailed today for 12 weeks for assaulting of 12 year old boy in custody. The kid (who can't be named for "protective" reasons) had been arrested at a children's home where he alledgedly had been drinking vodka. PC Gaffney was bringing him to be strip-searched when feeling "intimidated" he hit the boy so hard that a custody sergeant thought his nose was broken. read full story / add a comment

The newspaper of the Basque independence & armed struggle tradition "Gara" has carried an interview with Amadeu's mother & his lawyer on the weekend which they reflected on the release of the leader of Batasuna Arnaldo Otegi, & his call for dialogue and prisoner support. A translation to English of that Gara interview is included in this news piece on the ongoing campaigns.

Street activity, stencils, graffitis etc., are increasingly visible. International anarcho-solidarity has seen embassies and consuls picketed in South America & even Ireland.

This evenings picket of the Spanish embassy in Dublin 4 had a pretty good turn out considering it was called at less than a days notice. No less than 15 anarchists turned up as well as perhaps a dozen uniformed cops and four secret police. The secret police were so friendly they insisted on taking everyones name and addresses.

Have a look at these two short videos from youtube.

They show very similar instances - in the first one a police officer in New York City (Officer Patrick Pogan) assaults a protester at a critical mass bike ride, and in the second a member of the Garda Siochána (Garda Kevin O'Connor) assaults a protester at an anti-Shell protest in Mayo.

There is one big difference though. read full story / add a comment

Amnesty International documents the 20th anniversary of the massacre of prisoners in Iran. It notes that no one has been held accountable for this atrocity. Full text at link.

Twenty years after the then Iranian authorities began a wave of largely secret, summary and mass executions in September 1988, Amnesty International renews its call for those responsible for the “prison massacre” to be held accountable. There should be no impunity for such gross human rights violations, regardless of when they were committed. read full story / add a comment

According to a report delivered to the U.N. General Assembly on January 10, 2008 by the Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances (WGEID), there were no reported instances of persons disappeared in Haiti during the year 2007. The WGEID is part of the U.N. High Commission on Human Rights and as such is in the loop to receive regular human rights reports filed by the U.N. mission in Haiti. More than five months after Mr. Pierre-Antoine’s disappearance and public acknowledgement of the case by U.N. authorities in Haiti, the WGEID completely omitted any reference to it in their report to the General Assembly. read full story / add a comment

Ińaki de Juana Chaos who is due to be released this Summer has informed both the Basque political prisoner network and the authorities of his prison that he is on hunger strike again.

He has offered as reason the concerted media campaign of vilification launched against him in the last days as it was revealed that upon leaving prison and completing his prison sentences he will take up residence in a flat owned by his wife, who he married whilst in prison, on the same street as several victims of ETA.

In one of the last cases which finally should put the "Madrid 11th Bombing conspiracy theorists" beyond the pale of credibility, a court in Madrid has cleared 4 police officers in the forensic division of manipulating evidence. Their evidence which was exposed as flawed during the M11 trial had contributed to a conspiracy theory supported by elements of the right and far right during many years. They were subsequently charged with falsification but now are free and have been termed "honest policemen".

The court has decided that an administrative error led to the inclusion of "boric acid" in their report on the explosives and the intention of the charged men was not to falsely implicate ETA in the supply or procurement of the explosives used. read full story / add a comment

Tomorrow July 7 will see the anniversary of a series of Terrorist events which occured in London and the UK in 2005. Apart from the list of dead and wounded the legacy of those events are continuing counter-terrorism laws and powers which were rushed through the UK's parliament at that time. To date there has been no official public inquiry into the Terrorist events from July 7th to July 22nd 2005.

The inquest into the death of Jean Charles de Menezes in Stockwell Tube station London on the 22nd of July 2005 has been scheduled for 22nd September 2008 at Southwark Coroner's Court to be presided over by High Court Judge Sir Michael Wright QC. The setting of the inquest date was originally adjourned pending completion of the Health & Safety trial against the Office of the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis, which concluded in October 2007 with a guilty verdict. read full story / add a comment
this bloody coloured finger voted in a secret ballot

Zimbabweans today flocked to the polls. Not to exercise a choice - for there was none. But to make damn sure that after the secret ballot they had a bloody red finger.

No bloody red finger tonight means no democratic duty done today.

When the flock is shepherded by wolves it seems it prefers a bloody red finger to whatever else is on offer. Tomorrow Dr Richard Mugabe will be sworn in as President of Zimbabe. As one of the most articulate and poshest voices in African post-colonial history he will not feel the need to say fuck when he is sworn in. He will not besmirch democracy by cursing during his oath. read full story / add a comment
